The Stanley Bailey No. 4 smooth plane in Types 11 through 15 (roughly 1910-1928) is widely considered the peak of Stanley's hand-plane production: cast-iron body, hardwood handle, lateral adjustment, properly heat-treated blade. Modern production is decent but not equivalent.
Pricing in 2026: EUR 60-150 for cleaned Type 11-15 examples; collectors pay more for original japanning and uncut blades.

Type identification is via Patrick Leach's "Stanley Plane Type Study" - the casting details, lever-cap colour, and blade markings narrow down to within a few years.
Cracks in the cast-iron body are common and fatal. Check the mouth area (where the blade exits) particularly carefully.
